Am I the only one who was disturbed by the penultimate paragraph of Beccy Reese's otherwise excellent review of Joel Kovel's Overcoming Zionism (Books May Socialist Review)?
Reese states that, "In arguing to struggle for such a state Kovel is keenly aware... that there is an invisible hand shaping history that needs to be dislocated."
Lurid tales of "invisible hands" shaping history have been a staple of anti Semitic propaganda for centuries and have no place in any socialist publication, let alone one as principled as Socialist Review.
Socialists have a tough fight convincing people that their opposition to Zionism contains not a trace of anti-Semitism, so anything that hints of "hidden hands" and "Jewish Cabals" is something we can well do without.
