2019 marks the year of Avengers: Endgame the final instalment in Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). After the previous film Avengers: Infinity War audiences were left with the losses of many characters and the uncertainty of what was to come.
Endgame is a three-hour epic that pulls audiences through every emotion there is, from sadness and grief to exhilaration and triumph.
This range of human emotions is not only experienced by audiences but by the characters themselves, as they struggle to cope with their grief after that fatal Thanos click, as well as their sense of defeat in the battle of good versus evil.
It becomes clear that Thanos’s ideology does not pan out in the way he assumed it would; overpopulation does not appear to have been the cause of the universe’s suffering — people continue to suffer post-click.
The beginning of the film has audiences feeling pretty helpless, as they see a world in ruins and their heroes defeated — leaving us aching for justice to be served. These feelings can be echoed in our current world as many can feel helpless in the struggle for their own justice, yet we have no Avengers to step in and save us. This element is what makes the world of the Avengers so cathartic and satisfying because like most films it follows the narrative that good will always triumph over evil, that feeling of fulfilment as you see the evils of the world getting their comeuppance.
Endgame is something special as audiences have followed these characters for over 10 years, we have watched these characters grow and become invested in their passions and fears. Audiences have come to identify with the Avengers team because of their human nature (even those who aren’t human), they have the ability to feel human emotions and to see these characters we love face their biggest challenge yet is nothing short of legendary. While the ambience walking into Endgame is somewhat dire, walking out you will feel exhilarated and fulfilled.
Avengers: Endgame has everything you want from a superhero film including epic battles, amazing special effects, compelling characters, classic marvel humour and ultimately that justice we all love to see. A well-rounded ending to a saga that will stretch across generations.
