No Paralysis

Issue section:

I was amazed that Lee Salter wrote in last month's SR that John Pilger's films "instil a sense of paralysis" in the viewer. Lee adds that understandably Pilger does not offer any advice as to taking action because it would damage the "due impartiality" his documentaries need in order to be shown on British television.

In fact Pilger's work makes people justly angry over issues like Palestine and sanctions against Iraq, and has probably moved many thousands of people into taking action. His film Palestine is Still the Issue was the first time that viewers were presented with an unalloyed account of the savagery and misery that informs the daily life of the Palestinians.

Pilger didn't at the end say go on a march or sign up to campaigning organisation - and he didn't have to.
