Gordon Brown's infamy academy

Issue section:

So, Gordon Brown has finally signalled his support for the city academy programme.

I'm sure Francis Beckett, Alasdair Smith and Ken Muller (Fraud Academy, Socialist Review, June 2007) will share my sense of cynical relief: an end to his silence on this central plank of New Labour education policy. What else would we expect of Brown? How could he let his friends in big business down?

As the article shows, the city academy programme will only be stopped through opposition from the grassroots. That opposition links in with the wider public sector struggle against privatisation.
