The Sheffield Socialist Review book club met for the first time on a cold Sunday evening last month in the extremely pleasant surroundings of Cafe #9 in Nether Edge.
The book in question was Property by Valerie Martin. Most of the dozen people present had managed to read all or some of the book. The discussion perhaps began with some 'bourgeois literary criticism' but soon moved beyond that into whole new areas, particularly when we got into the 'psychology of political change'.
By the end, everybody felt that they had gained new insights into why the world needs changing and how it can be changed. Such was the enthusiasm and commitment that we even avoided a big row over which book to discuss next time.
This was a brilliant way to spend an evening.
